Mozambique rises to the energy challenge
Key figures
Bouygues Energies & Services has built an additional power line for Brazilian group Vale to help with the expansion of its mine in Tete province, Mozambique. This large-scale project will contribute to the development of the country’s national power grid.
124
pylons installed
220
KV carried
2,600
metres of cable
With a presence in Mozambique now spanning more than 10 years,
Bouygues Energies & Services took on a complex technical project to supply electricity to the Vale mine.
The installation of the dual-circuit line required:
- the mine-sweeping and clearing of 42 km² of savannah
- the installation of 124 overhead pylons and their foundations
- the installation of 600 km of cable
The project was a major technical challenge for Bouygues Energies & Services, involving deployment on land and over water. Crossing the Zambezi river required the work of design/build teams from France and Africa for the installation of:
- Two 156-m high pylons on each bank of the river
- 2,600m of suspended Curlew cables (with carbon fibre cores), connected to a central supporting structure
The Vale project was also a remarkable challenge in terms of manpower:
- + 500,000 hours of work
- cooperation between multi-cultural teams
- training local teams to work at heights and a gradual ramp-up of their skills
- zero accidents
Bouygues Energies & Services is proud to have contributed to the development of the region and Mozambique’s power grid infrastructure.
